All you people (Emeth, The Dane, Rick, Moriah, who else?) hooked on LibraryThing.com amaze me. Sounds really neat and horribly fascinating, and all, but how in the world do you have time to catalogue all the books you own? We can hardly find places to set them (Nathanael has been in the back yard right all afternoon buildinig bookshelves) let alone go through each one and copy out all the identifying information.

Mike and I were just discussing that yesterday….

I don’t really have the time to. That’s why I only was able to get through the books I bought through Amazon that I have the ISBN’s for. The rest of my books are stacked five layers deep in my room (one shelf in front of another with two layers in each and then stacks on the floor) and I can’t get to them. And even if they weren’t inaccessible, I’m gone from 6 AM till 8 or 9 PM … that’s why I wanna hire some computer-literate kids to type everything in for me.

Yeah, I haven’t even catalogued half of my books. I’ve been writing down ISBN’s at home and then typing then during my office hours. I only have about 15 hours a week of set work. The rest is flexible.

Yeah, if I were still nursing at the keyboard alot, I could see it getting done… Now I play on the computer when Kate runs around playing in the room, so I never know how much time I have and random stacks of books would not last long on my desk. Kate grabs books and pretends to read them. One day I found her literally curled up with the collected poems of Tennyson, turning the pages and looking intently…

Never in a million years would I even dream of having the time to do such a thing! Sounds gloriously organized, though.

I figure I’m doing good to just know what I have and where I have it. Cataloguing? Nu-uh.

Gotta love the toddlers of literate parents. . .

[…] If the LiveJournal and Xanga and numerous other journaling sites are the digital devolution of the ancient diary which writers and young girls the world over used to keep under their pillows at night, then what are weblogs descended from? Apparently, blogs devolve from the once common commonplace. Only now, our family doesn’t have to wait until we’re dead to come leafing through our thoughts on various topics. Naturally, the commonplace only worked well if you chose good categories. If you were uncomfortable with categorizing data, you could, like some people, use an alphabetical index or, like others, enter notes by date. A few bloggers picked up on this long before me, but I thought it was interesting enough to file. Comments (0) […]
