Man, that’s harsh!

Nathanael on January 12th, 2006 at 11:39 am

Harsh? I’m just populating the web with conspiracy theories.

Duane Jones on January 13th, 2006 at 1:03 pm

yes, please

O.K. I don’t understand the blog post or replies.
Am I an under educated individual, or a relic from the past who wouldn’t or couldn’t understand any of this?

With Love,

I just wrote “yes please,” because Nathanael says it a lot, and I was thinking of him.

Understanding this joke requires familiarity with “l33t” speak, whereby children who like to imagine themselves as “hackers” substitute numbers or non-alphanumeric characters for certain letters. There is also the tendency to puposefully mis-spell words, since it makes them more elite, or “l33t / l337″ in the minds of their contemporaries. Somehow this has carried over into Berek’s postings and writing style, such that he stands with one foot in the world of academia, and the other firmly placed in the land of “script kiddies” [google on any of those terms to find definitions.] Succinctly, they wish to make their writing appear like a form of code. Those who practice this vulgar art are usually mocked both privately and publickly.

In all, Mr. Jones, I think you are the better for not understanding the post or the joke, as such poisoning of the English language is of benefit to none; save those of us who preserve our intellect, and let it not be overtaken by such twiddling occupations.

[And now, I shall end my flowery commentary, lest I become a bugbear.]

Brent,

Thanks for the clarification, though I might still be without uunderstanding.

Mayhaps I am too consumed with my current situation… of which I made a post today on our blog.

Brent,
You old bugbear, you. Thank you for your eloquent explanation.

I have to read Derrida this week, for the first time. Am very much looking forward to it; apparently he’s inspired by Barthes, and I adore Barthes.

Let us know how you like Derrida. If you have any questions on him, write Daniel Silliman (in our sidebar).
