Has anyone out there experienced really painful migraines during pregnancy? What did you do?

Edit: A nurse friend came over last night to check BP, but it was only 102/60, so it doesn’t seem like the headaches are related to BP.

Pray!!!

I did and it was not fun because I didn’t like taking even a Tylenol during pregnancy. I tried to avoid all migraine triggering foods and used cold compresses on the back of my neck. Drinking lots of water helped too. Of course when those things didn’t work, I threw Jen at Steve when he walked in the door form work and retreated to our dark bedroom! I will pray for you!

I gave in and took the narcotics the doctor prescribed me. Of course, I also had the luxury of staying in bed all day, which I supppose isn’t really an option for you.

Hey Sarah…tough call. I would see your docs. How often does this happen?

Don’t take narcotics, though. They aren’t even indicated for a migraine, and have been proven to not work in migraines….There are the triptans (relpax, imitrex), but I don’t know the pregnancy safety use..Your doctor would though. Those things work like a charm.

P.S. you sure they are migraines? check your blood pressure when they come on…could be BP spikes, which, if so, need to be addressed. I would call my doctor on monday to get a checkup..

Happens every other day or so. Often Tylenol or Tylenol PM (depending on the time of day) don’t do anything to help. I have really low BP…in the low to mid 90s, so I doubt it’s spiking to a dangerous level.

I’d have to know more about the nature of the headaches to say whether or not they are migraine..Migraine are usually unilateral, associated with the auras (sometimes)….I dunno..Talk to ur doc about the headache and the triptans..No reason in this day and age to live in pain..

Archer

after suffering with a headache that would. not. go. away for almost a week, i went into the doctor. he prescribed a narcotic. i cried because i did not want to take anything stronger that tylenol but my sweet doctor convinced me that it was okay. the narcotic at least let me sleep, which made a huge difference.

wow, h/a for a whole week? Yikes. I would have been worried about a severe HA in a young person, or any person, for that long!

archer - hormones are a lovely thing. ever since my daughter was born, i still get hormone-triggered headaches every month, but it was so bad during my pregnancy that i actually thought i might die.

in fact, that pregnancy was my last one because i wrote myself a letter to be given back to me anytime i started contemplating another baby. it basically says NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!DON’T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the narcotics did help though, because the exchaustion of being preganant, and caring for a 19 month old, and having a headache, and throwing up a few times a day all combined to create a perfect storm. once i had a way to sleep for 6-8 hours, i started feeling a little more human.

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with migraines. Pregnancy hormones can be brutal sometimes. :( I hope it gets better soon.

Having never experienced personally, (or as an involved second party) pregnancy related headaches…

I’m afraid that I’m not much help.

I can however, provide advice for treatment for painful muscle cramps of the calves, and lower back pain during night-time sleeping hours!

For I was the “Physical Therapist” “On-Call” during those times!

With Love,

Dad J

P.S. Hope you are doing better.

Oh no. Headaches.
Are you sure they are not sinus related? Be sure you are drinking plenty of water.
Also headaches could be due to a disfunction in on of your ribs or neck muscles that is being exacerbated by the pregnancy hormones, try finding a jones strain/counterstrain practitioner in your area at http://www.jiscs.com/FindTherapist.aspx.
Hope it magically disappears, anyway.

Hope you’re feeling better. Would love to talk sometime about what the PCP said. Let me know if I can help.

Sarah,
I just saw this entry…
Probably too late, but yes I had the pregnancy induced migraines too. We figured out I just was not getting enough calories in during the day. I had double vision and pain that brought me to my knees. It was usually a sign that I needed to eat… hours ago! Like I said yesterday, I had the low bp too, so it makes me wonder if low bp could contribute to HAs in the opposite way high bp does. Hmm?
